Snapped this photo of a painting on display at the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville, NY, depicting a ship rescue off the coast of Long Island . The people in the painting look like they are from the 1960’s or 70’s, but the rescue style and boat indicate a much older time period. According to the museum website the waters surrounding Long Island were considered a “valley of ship wrecks.”
Along with the exhibits inside the museum, it is summertime and the Long Island Maritime Museum hosts a bunch of events to enjoy the weather and nautical location, including free outdoor movie nights. Get there!
