94117.org, A Hyperlocal San Francisco Blog That Never Was

Back in the day (2005?) some Internet-savvy people who loved the area of San Francisco they lived in decided to start a website dedicated to all the interesting people, stickers and artwork that encompassed their neighborhood. That website was 94117.org and that neighborhood was The Haight. Its mission statement simple:

The web site is dedicated to the hippies, dot commers, deadheads, artists, musicians, and dreamers that make and enjoy the neighborhood art of the Haight District.

There was so much promise in this site that never was. You can see its thoughts on street art were years before its time:

Some visitors balk at the stickers and flyers that adorn our streets. But neighborhood art is a product of our dreams and thoughts. The messages swirl in a cultural whirlpool that defines our city and who we are.

So what happened to capturing the dream that is 94117.org? Just like the amount of licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Roll Pop, the world may never know… But if you know why not tell us, c’mon.
