Temps are Down and Surf is Up: Fall on Long Island

This weekend brought the first real taste of Fall weather to Long Island. It also brought solid surf.

For me, Fall is the time when Long Island looks and feels its best.  Summer crowds (see “Locals Only” Takes on a New Meaning) and heat are gone, and the Atlantic Ocean turns a cold shade of blue with the sky seeming to hang lower each day.

Taking advantage of no crowds and decent waves, I started the day off at Gilgo beach and then headed towards eastern Long Island to surf Quogue’s west jetty at the end of Dune Road.

Fall is here, so get ready for 4/3 wetsuites, empty lineups, plenty of clean waves and…sweaters.
