There’s Artwork Hanging From The Phones Lines Across Fell Street And Along The Wiggle

I’ve been riding past these funky eyeball looking mobiles hanging from the phones lines along The Wiggle for the past month now, and just recently noticed a heart accompanying the “eyeballs” across Fell Street when you’re about to dump into The Panhandle.

Here’s a zoomed in view:

Props to whoever is making these and getting them up. For one thing, they don’t ever seem to be coming down and have already made it through the biggest storm of the year. Also, Fell Street is pretty much a highway (that desperately needs a separated bike lane) so it must have been late at night or a risky move to have gotten this mobile/art project up on those phone lines.

Put in a separated bike lane, because Fell Street Is For Lovers.

Update: The heart is part of an art project called “Love Aqui,” by Ana Rivero Rossi and Todd Hanson. Mission Local has more background on the now global art project in a story called Challenging an Urban Myth. Really cool stuff.

Thank you Jeremy!

Bike-Part Vending Machines Exist And We Need Them In Every City

Bike Fixation, a Minneapolis-based company, is now providing cyclists in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area with access to bike-part vending machines.

You can buy a tube or patch kit, pump up your tires for free, and make simple adjustments using supplied tools.

These “bike repair kiosks” are not meant to replace the need for a bike shop’s repair department, but instead can act as a low-cost extension of a bike shop.

The Bike Fixation sales pitch goes a little something like this:

Do you want a way to expand your bike shop’s reach without the expense of a new store location? Do you want to offer something new and innovative to your local cycling community while helping promote your shop’s image? Want to start a small business and support bicycle infrastructure at the same time? Bike Fixtation can help! Bike Fixtation can supply you a complete self-service bicycle repair kiosk using our in-house designed quality components that are tested and proven.

I can’t image that a bike-part vending machine would be cheap, but it would be awesome to setup an Ice Tubes branded one along The Wiggle. I’d buy a new color handlebar tape every week!

Not even the bicycle artwork in San Francisco has gears. Seen on The Wiggle at Waller and Pierce.

The Future Of Bike Lights – LED Teeth

[photo via The New York Times]

Imagine biking The Wiggle at 9pm and cracking a smile to let the other street traffic know you’re on your bike. This is the future, people. LED your grill!

According to The New York Times:

The new fashion accessories were originally created as an experiment by two Japanese designers and are now being used in a commercial [...]

The LED smiles can easily be affixed to your teeth and glow different colors while you smile. The colors can be changed wirelessly through a computer interface. Of course they work best in the dark.

The NYT article has more info, including some sweet videos of people with LED grills.

San Francisco MUNI Bicycle Drawbridge Effect

As the N Judah crosses Church Street along Duboce Avenue going inbound, it creates a drawbridge effect for cyclists coming out of The Wiggle riding eastbound towards the Duboce Bikeway Mural. This effect occurs as the N train stops all car traffic going in either direction on Church Street, which allows cyclists to cross the intersection carefree. When timed right, it’s quite awesome.

Bike Snob NYC Rides Through San Francisco

There were a few more bicycles on the road than usual today during my commute home via The Wiggle. It turns out that I perfectly timed an entrance into the Bike Snob NYC San Francisco Ride. There were about 30 cyclists riding together when I snapped this photo at Fell St. and Divisadero. A rider who I was chatting with said they started at Ritual Coffee Roasters in the Mission and were headed towards Golden Gate Park. I peeled off from the group around the Panhandle.
